For many years, the phone companies required businesses to own and maintain a Private Branch eXchange (PBX) to connect their office phones to the Public Switched Telephone network (PSTN).

The PBX is an expensive piece of equipment, which is installed on premises – usually in a phone closet. The cap-ex and operating costs of a PBX is substantial to any business. Plus, PBXs need regular upgrades and may need
